A Gentleman Never Surrenders by Lauren Smith is NOW AVAILABLE!

 Cover Designer: Elizabeth Turner

Release Date: September 12, 2017

Synopsis

Love is worth a little scandal.

Owen Hadley needs a wife. Preferably a wealthy one. Alas, there aren’t a great number of heiresses willing to marry a rogue of no particular fortune—luckily, if there is ever a gentleman capable of melting a lady’s chilly heart, it’s Owen.

Milly has had enough of the marriage mart. If matrimony means giving up her freedom for a foppish husband, then society can take their idea of marital bliss and toss it. But when the ton’s most notorious rogue mistakenly makes his way into her bedchambers, Milly finds herself unexpectedly and unwillingly at the altar . . .

Yet the more time she spends with her new husband, the more Milly starts to wonder if the marriage she never wanted may be the best thing that’s ever happened to her. Now it’s up to Owen to convince Milly that what started as a mistake is anything but—and that every night with him will be more wonderfully scandalous than the last.

My Thoughts

It’s no secret how much I love historical romance stories.  This one was a new author to me so I was very interested in reading this.  I did not read the first book in this series, and was able to follow along the storyline just fine – so this can be read as a standalone.

When the book starts we are introduced to Owen Hadley, a man in desperate need of a rich wife.  His house & estate are in need of attention and care but he does not have the funds to fix it up.  He is aware that it is unlikely any rich woman will marry a broke man in debt with no title to give, so he decides to trap a lady.  He has his eye set on Rowena Pepperwith because she is rich and very young.  However, the night he sets his plan in motion he stumbles into the room of the wrong Pepperwith sister.  Now he is to be married to Mildred, who is not at all what he wanted in a wife.  The more they get to know each other & the more it seems their initial assumptions, and ideas of who their spouse is, was wrong.  They are more alike than they originally thought.

I think this author did a great job of bringing this couple together.  At first they seem like fire and ice or like oil & water.  They each have walls up and boundaries around their hearts but secretly they both want love and a partner in their marriage.  I loved reading the journey the relationship takes them on, to get them to realize that they aren’t so different as they thought.  The book focuses on Owen & Milly, but we do revisit with Leo & Ivy from the first book – if you have read that one.  And this one ended with a sneak peek at the next book in the series which will involve Milly’s little sister Rowena.  I can’t wait for that one to come out!
