About the Book
The Sweet Spot is a classic love story with a sexy, modern edge, set in the sleepy West Country village of Appleton Vale, and in the glittering world of professional golf.
Olivia escapes London to overcome memories of heartbreak, and moves to Appleton Vale to ghostwrite the autobiography of Sebastian Bloom, former world number one golfer and global icon. But he doesn’t make things easy for her; Olivia is not ready for a new relationship and fights her feelings for Sebastian.
Their story comes to a head at the most prestigious golf tournament in the world, The Open Championship, where Sebastian’s return to form sets up an explosive clash with his lifelong rival, Troy McLoud.
As the lives of Olivia, Sebastian and the residents of Appleton Vale interweave, passions flare and the stakes rise.
“Jump in,” Sebastian opened the door of the ancient Land Rover for her and then they
were off, bouncing across paddocks, stopping now and then to open gates or usher a
wayward sheep back into its field.
Right at the far end of the estate a team of specialists were undertaking restoration
work on a pair of 18 th century farm cottages. Sebastian stopped the car and led Olivia
over to the site to get a closer look.
“They’ll be finished in the spring, bit of a building site now so it’s not safe to take you
in there. Another time,” he promised.
He had a quick word with the foreman and, satisfied with his response, ushered Olivia
back into the car and continued on to the ancient stable block that was anything but
ancient, in terms of its state of the art facilities.
“I had the yard and schools restored as a project for Georgiana to get involved in,”
Sebastian said proudly. “She adores horses and she’s a cracking little rider, I’m
hoping she’ll turn it into a business when she’s ready.”
“It’s perfect,” Olivia replied, dreamily.
“You can come and spend some time here with Georgiana if you like, when I’m not
breathing down your neck.”
“Right now, I wouldn’t mind one bit if you were breathing down my neck”, Olivia
muttered under her breath. Looking up she was relieved he hadn’t heard her as he
“Ready for the showpiece?” Sebastian’s eyes danced with anticipation of her reaction.
As they rounded the corner, a magnificent pair of 19 th century glass houses came into
view. The weak sunshine bounced off the glass, reflecting a myriad of colours
intensely rich against the backdrop of the autumnal sky.
“They represent a remarkable confluence of opposites in architecture and
technology,” Sebastian informed her.
“A remarkable what of what?” Olivia teased.
Sebastian smiled and continued, “They were ground-breaking in their day, come and
have a look,” He steered her through the vast iron framed door and into a veritable
Olivia gasped, “Oh Sebastian, it’s beautiful.”
“We’ve got over a hundred different types of exotic plant species in here, and Hattie
grows enough fruit and veg to feed the five thousand next door.”
“It’s like being in another world.” Olivia began walking around, softly fingering
leaves, and bending to take in the scent of the flora surrounding her.
“Sebastian, come over here,” Olivia called from across the room. “You didn’t tell me
you had turtles stashed away in here.”
He could see her kneeling down by the oasis that Georgiana had created for her pet
He pointed them out. “This one’s Queen Boadicea and the other one’s Joan of Arc, or
it could be the other way round, I’m not entirely sure.”
Olivia burst out laughing.
“Georgiana’s keen on strong, historical women, she was very insistent on the names
at the time,” Sebastian explained.
“That’s hilarious.” She turned away from the turtles to continue the tour and tripped
over a terracotta pot. Tumbling forward, she was destined for a bath with Boadicea
and Joan before Sebastian’s lightning-quick reactions intervened.
“Woah, steady on,” he grabbed her, pulling her towards his chest, gently wrapping his
arms around her, holding her close and nuzzling the top of her head.
Olivia squeaked, “No, please don’t, I can’t.” She pulled away from Sebastian as if his
touch had scalded her. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting that, you confuse me,” she
admitted. But as she looked into his eyes she saw the shutters to his soul come
crashing down once more.
About Anneli Lort
Anneli Lort lived with a charming cast of characters in her head for a number of years before she found the time to sit down and bring them to life in the Appleton Vale series. Once she put pen to paper her imagination was free to create a character driven world of contemporary romance that is both heartwarming and engaging.
In a public relations career that spanned more than two decades Anneli worked closely with elite professionals at the highest level and with some of the world’s biggest sporting companies. With this came an access-all-areas pass to the greatest sports events on the planet where she saw for herself the tension, drama and emotions that were played out behind the scenes. While TV audiences around the world watched the sporting excitement unfold, she was there to witness first-hand what really happened before and afterwards – the untold stories the rest of the world never got to see. This is the rich and enviable background she brings to her debut novel – The Sweet Spot.
Anneli lives in a village much like her fictional creation – Appleton Vale – that is nestled against the foothills of the South Downs. She spends her days working in brand communications, writing, walking her dog – Hector – and riding her New Forest Pony Henry. The dog shares the house; the horse has his own rather spacious accommodation.
Anneli is currently writing the second novel in the Appleton Vale series – The Country Club – which will be on sale in December 2017.
