MY THOUGHTS
Even though this was the second book in the series it was still the first book I started with. I believe this can be read as a standalone, because I was able to follow the story. There were a few mentions to events that must’ve happened in the first book but I didn’t feel I was missing major plot points by starting with this book. I will have to go back and read the first book in this series though, because I enjoyed Damian & Layla’s so much I want to know more about William & Cristina.
This book follows Damian Trent and Layla Reece; these two are drawn together from their first meeting and even though Damian leaves to try to stay away from her, he finds himself back in New York City and working in close proximity to her a year later. Layla does not want to be near him and yet she just can’t seem to get away. The danger that Damian was trying to protect her from comes about and he realizes that he would do anything to keep her safe. Even though Layla wants to avoid Damian she knows he is the one who will be able to keep her safe.
I enjoyed this book; the chemistry between the characters was realistic and intense. There was enough suspense to keep the reader interested and on the edge of their seat, and the book seemed to fly by. The pacing of the book was good, but I kind of wish there was more for me to read – not because the book was rushed but just because I was so engrossed into the story that it went by too quickly. I do like how the author wrote her characters: Layla seemed hesitant to get involved with Damian again because of the last time she had interactions with him. Her character was so relatable to any woman that had been scorned before that as the reader I instantly loved her. Damian, similarly, knew that he was going to have to work to gain her trust back, so that made me happy – to see a realistic relationship between the two, even though they do have that instant connection. The author wrote this so that the story switched between Damian & Layla’s story lines so that we could delve even deeper into their lives. If you haven’t read this yet, you should.
