Synopsis: The last thing Brett Ross wants is to be back in the same old damn small town he grew up in, but his best friend is getting married, so there’s no way he’s skipping yet another visit back home. He knows what he’s getting into, coming back here, but the one thing he didn’t count on was the way Anna Hamilton made him feel the first time he sets eyes on her…and she’s all grown up. Anna’s always been in love with Brett, even if she’s always been his best friend’s annoying little sister to him. But when he looks at her, she doesn’t see annoyance in his eyes anymore. If anything, she sees a silent calling for her to save him from himself…and she’s just the girl to do it. All she needs is to find a way to escape her pesky, protective older brothers…
And then the game is on.
My Review: I have never read a book by Diane Alberts before, but I will be looking into her books now. The premise of the book is not necessarily a new one but this author tells so that it seems new. Anna is Brett’s best friend’s little sister, and she has had her heart set on one man since she was young (aka Brett); then there is the protective older brother thing going on too – does this sound familiar yet? We see this main theme in a lot of books but it’s the way the author wrote the characters themselves that make this unique.
I fell in love with Anna’s character. Throughout the whole book her brothers are trying to protect her from getting her heart broken and doing everything in their power to show her that Brett is not good enough for her (though it was amusing to me to read the lengths her brothers go to in order to keep them apart). I guess there is just something about your childhood crush though because she does not let it affect her heart. I love reading a female lead who isn’t afraid to risk her heart for a chance at love. She even goes so far as to say if their time ends badly she would still be his friend? If that doesn’t show her depth of devotion, then I don’t know what will. She cares so deeply about Brett, through all the happiness, awkward moments and tears; of course there are ups and downs between them – no story would be complete without a little drama. And the way the author handled the drama was on point; it was so relatable and realistic that I forgot I was reading a fiction book for a minute there.
I’ll tell you what made me mad though – how easily Brett gave up. Anna has loved him for so long, and he has known this, but a little fight from her and he just gives up? What in the world, man! There are plenty of misunderstandings and miscommunications in this book that keep us guessing as to whether they will end happily or not. Brett’s character is this man who just wants to deserve love but grew up thinking he wasn’t worthy of it. It broke my heart that he just went with it, because he assumed that no one would love him as he was? So saddening. I’ll admit – I did not like this man in the beginning (I don’t know if it was ‘us women have to stick together’ or just ‘this guy is a grade-a jerk’) – but as the reader gets to know more and more about him and how he grew up, you just couldn’t help wanting him to have a happily ever after with Anna.
